Awkward

I'm socially awkward in conversation with just about anybody. Usually I'm the most socially awkward person in the room.

Today, though, I came in contact with someone who is possibly even more socially awkward than I am.

I had some time to kill before Monkey's school concert this morning. I picked up a coffee and wandered into the drug store to look at the magazines. I perused the selection of wedding mags, Men's mags, parenting mags, fashion mags and hobby mags with little interest, then I noticed Psychology Today. I've always been interested in psychology and I miss the psych classes I was taking when we lived in NB. I decided to buy it and headed to the cash.

The cashier greeted me and scanned my magazine. While I riffled through my bag for my card, she checked out the cover of the magazine. The stories on the cover are all related to mental health with titles like: "The hard knocks survival guide", "5 friendship fixes", "A new view of life in utero" and "9 ways to overcome failure".

She looked them over then glanced at me obviously wondering what mental illness or life crisis I was suffering from that made me need this magazine. I laughed and said, "I haven't read it before so I can't even tell you what it's like."

She raised her eyebrows and said, "Okay..."

I handed her my card and she rang it through. I signed the receipt. She said, "Thank you."

I said, "You're welcome," as is my habit. You see, I always say 'you're welcome' in response to 'thank you' because I was trained to when I was in customer service at IBM and I still haven't fully recovered from their brainwashing. I realized 'you're welcome' was an odd thing to say to a cashier at the drug store so I added, "Thanks!"

She raised her eyebrows again and said, "Okay..."

I walked out the door chuckling.

I'm not sure if I'm more amused by her or if she's more put off by me. I think it's a wash, to tell the truth.

All together now: Okay...

Don't ever lose being polite, too many people have no idea. One of my pet peeves is cashiers who do not say thank you!

Maybe she thought you were psychoanalyzing her?

At any rate I think polite awkward small talk beats rudeness any day.

I think its sad how many people don't say thank you and you're welcome anymore. Manners always have a place.

Reluctant Housewife said...

I find it interesting how a little story about an awkward conversation became a story about how polite we both were in our awkwardness. Heh.

You're right, though. At least we both said 'thank you'.

That being said, I'm not sure raising one's eyebrows and saying a skeptical, "Okay..." in response to people is exactly polite.

i always say thank you whenever a waiter or waitress fills my drink and they always look at me like i'm a weirdo! i'm just trying to be polite!? sheesh!

haha! it's ok, I have awkward moments like that all the time... Like saying "you too" when the person behind the counter at the movie theater tells you to enjoy your show! ...It happens to the best of us! HAPPY SITS DAY!

MaryRC said...

what happened to real customer service, its sadly a thing of the past. how sad is it when being polite is weird.

congrats on your sits day!

Natalie said...

I've had similar things happen to me too! Or I'll get weird looks when we go to eat out and I'm the one person at the table that says thank you for every single thing. I guess it's to make up for everyone else that doesn't say anything?

I definitely have the awkward movie theater moments too! ps Happy SITS day!

I think we all have days like that.....a misfire in communication.
But honestly, I think you made more of it than there was. I think the cashier could care less what you are reading and whether or not you subscribe to such a magazine. I think she was just surprised that you felt the need to say such and to correct your "your welcome" with a thank you.
Anyway....
Congratulations on your day in the SITS sun!
Have a most beautiful day.

Oh I'm the same way with politeness...it's the way I was raised! It irks me to no end that some people don't have manners. And customer service these days is a joke, esp if teenagers are involved, like at the local bookstore. No eye contact, no "hi, how are you today"...ugh!

Congrats on your SITS day!

I'm going to say it, "Thank you," for your blog. I remember in college in a journalism class the instructor told the class when someone says, "How's it going?" they really don't care or expect an answer. I think that was the most deflating moment. Because I always cared, I always assumed others did, too. Why would anyone ask if they didn't care. I hate empty platitudes. All the people who do care are probably blogging today! LOL Congrats on your SITS feature blogger highlight!
