In response to seriously uncool treatment at the hands of The Times On-Line, Kelly at Don Mills Diva is calling on bloggers to stand up and declare their awesomeness: "I think everyone out there who blogs with passion and with creativity and with skill should speak up and declare themselves a Writer with a capital W. I think it's time that all bloggers, especially daddy and mommy bloggers (no, I don't resent that term - I embrace it) should demand the respect that their traffic, their influence and their talent commands."

Me?
I have an enormous case of blogger inferiority complex.
Take Kelly, for instance. Kelly is amazingly honest at her blog. Her posts are well thought out and heartfelt. She shares her life and she shares herself. She's an amazing woman - accomplished, intelligent, open, big-hearted and strong. Kelly deserves respect, no question.
But do I?
I don't tend to share enough of myself here at this blog - the blog that is supposed to be about my life. There's not much heartfelt going on around here. I'm way too shy. I hide behind my humour and I avoid showing you the REAL me. Really, this blog is my personal playground and I don't want too much sadness or struggle hanging around in my playground. I get down sometimes. I fight with my husband sometimes. I get frustrated with my kids. I often feel isolated and lonely. And I feel guilty for those negative feelings because, really, my life is wonderful. I'm grateful for what I have. But I don't often talk about any of that. Instead I link to videos that amuse me and write cute little captions to go with pictures of my kids. I think this reluctance (natch) to share all of myself online is the reason I can't seem to break the 40 readers barrier. I average 30-40 reader/day and I have for 9 months, or so. My blog seems to be unimportant in the grand scheme of the blogosphere. My voice is tiny and distant and not really saying much of anything.
I've always been like this. This blog inferiority complex is directly related to my personal inferiority complex. I tend to think the things I do are less important than what everyone else is doing.
I'm angry at myself about this. I mean seriously pissed-off. I've spent the first 30 years of my life selling myself short and assuming I wasn't good enough at what I was doing to work hard at it; that I wasn't talented enough to bother trying. I've never worked hard towards anything (that is, until the past three or four years when I've been working hard towards a lot of things - grad school, blogging, crafting, parenthood, self-respect, autonomy, etc...). I'm a moron, basically. And a bit of a jerk. I'd like to tell that little self-doubting voice in my head to sit down and shut up already. I'd like to go Kung Fu Panda all up in its grill.
So, since Kelly invited me to do so, let me drop my inferiority complex for a minute. Let me also drop my in-born Canadian reluctance to crow about my own accomplishments. Let me, for just this one post, BLOG PROUD.
I mean - look at me.
I'm doing stuff. REAL stuff.
I blog. I've written over 300 posts, some of them even have words and thoughts and paragraphs and things. Some of them are really funny. Some of them are even heartfelt. They all took time to put together. They took effort. I've also put a lot of thought and effort into the look and layout of the blog. I've nurtured it. I love my blog. I'm proud of my blog and the 13 months I've been self-publishing. I think my blog is entertaining, lighthearted, joyful and funny. I think it's worthwhile and, yes, important.
I create. I make crochet stuff and bead jewelry. I taught myself to do these things. I also created two brand new human beings. Tell me these things aren't awesome.
I'm smart, funny, quirky, creative and, yes I AM accomplished. I might not have big traffic or influence but I do have talent. I have talent in spades. And sadly this is NEWS to me.
I've been wasting my potential. And I'm declaring right here, right now, that I'm done. I'm not going to sell myself short anymore. I'm going to hold my head up high and be proud of what I can do and what I'm doing. I'm just as good as everyone else.
And it's about time I realized it.
So, yes, I will
Write on And Respect the Blog!
Thanks, Kelly!

You're welcome!!!
And thank you - this was such an inspiring post - I could feel your pride swelling more with each line.
You have evey right to be proud of what you have carved out in your little corner of the blogosphere - Write on!
YAY! That's amazing. You can count me in for the ride. :)
OMG! You SO should be proud - what a great post. Thanks for the comment on my blog and now that I have found you...I'm going be that #41st reader for you!
Heck yah girl!
I can't even type that big enough for the energy I'm putting behind it.
There's just too many dang blogs, we're all a tiny blog voice. And so what? It's fun, you meet new people, maybe get in a few laughs and go on about your day.
Buck up! You're doing a fantastic job!
Good for you! 300 posts?! Wow. You are a bloggy rock star, in my book!! :-)
Excellent!
Write On-keep being you, keep making us laugh, keep creating...
And your blog is beautiful, btw.
don't make me come over there and slap you mel - you are AWESOME - i'm so glad you are realising this now! your blog is YOUR blog for you to share what you want. if you want to share more, we'll still read it and lap it up and love ya even more. is it a wonder you got your acceptance letter and wrote this post in the SAME WEEK???
if you build it - they will come...
That was the very best post EVER. I'm all weepy now, that's the most full on, honest, straightforward post I've ever read.
Words? Where are you words? Don't fail me noooooow!
I'm inspired just reading!
I'm with you girl. Keep doing it!
You go girl!
And some of my posts have paragraphs too! Pretty snazzy for a girl who REFUSED to take an English class in college. ;)
Great post!! I love writing my blog, and I love reading about other people's lives!!
This is one top notch post. I love the look of your blog, too. I know what you mean about the distanced voice -- I know because I do it too. I think there is room for both kinds of voice.
Can I be reader 42? I'll sure be back. And as and when I can, try to read 300 (!!) back posts.
Wow.
You tell 'em!
I'm the same kind of blogger as you, but I don't think I'd have had the nerve to write this post! You ARE awesome!!! I LOVE the honesty!
You should be proud! My first time here, and I like your blog! :)
Congrats girl! be proud for sure! over 300 posts is AWESOME! And i like your writing!

This is a brilliant post! Blog strong, girl!
You have one more PROUD follower in me! thanks for this post, I needed to remember to be BLOG PROUD and embrace my inner "mommy blogger"!
Hai from SITS! ;) Happy SITS day!
Oh I love this post! I can really relate to ya... and I love your blog title. Haha!
This paragraph spoke so strongly to me:
I've been wasting my potential. And I'm declaring right here, right now, that I'm done. I'm not going to sell myself short anymore. I'm going to hold my head up high and be proud of what I can do and what I'm doing. I'm just as good as everyone else.
And it's about time I realized it.
I'm sticking it on my wall above my computer, so that I see it every time I sit down to write a post.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
This is why I joined SITS!
xo
Fab post! I think it's hard to toot your own horn, but doesn't it feel great when you let go and do it?! Love it =)
Go girl! Heck hardly anyone reads my blog but in the end you have to do it for you. YOu have tons to be proud of and it is a fine thing to realize. Blog on baby.
Great post! And congratulations on being featured.
This post struck a nerve with me because about a month ago blogger removed my blog(not sure why). I had over 300 post and some followers and was finally building some traffic. I loved my blog. I worked hard on my layout, had some great tutorials and photos. Talk about damaging your self-esteem.
I have tried not to let it get me down. I've been rebuilding my blog life now for the past few weeks. I love my new blog, the layout, I already have some followers, and almost 30 posts. But sometimes I just get that pang of missing my old blog. Weird, I know.
Your blog is great!! I'll keep coming back!!
Blog on:)
www.chalkaboutit.blogspot.com
This is a totally awesome post, very inspiring. I bet it felt awesome to write it too, that totally comes across! Happy featured blog day at SITS. I'll definitely be following you!
What an awesome post! As someone who has a 'personal blog' I used to feel inferior on some forums because other bloggers, especially the ones who are blogging about SEO and SME and whatever else, tend to look down on personal blogs. But I have discover that if you are looking for ORIGINAL reading material, then you can find it mostly on personal blogs.
I have read about 60 articles from 60 different bloggers about SEO, SME, 'How to Increase Traffic',.. and they are all the same. And so boring,... HUGE YAWNNNNN! So, big ups for personal blogs and original content!
I love blogging!
Way to go--and so many people identify with this it isn't funny!! It looks like you broke that barrier lol!
Awesome! What you've accomplished is amazing. The blog world is littered with half-started, now dead blogs and you are still blogging and writing creatively. That's an accomplishment in itself!
Happy SITS Day! What a powerful and empowering post. Your writing is full of emotion and very authentic. I hope you are not sell yourself short any longer.
Blog on sista!
I love it.
I completely agree- and that's probably why I have SO many blogs to read. It's hard to get through them all, and most of the time I don't, but they all have something important to share!
Stopping by from SITS! This was a fabulous post, and I could relate to every. single. word. Thank you for sharing!! :)
Fantastic post!
Congrats on being FB
Lisa
Stopping by from SITS! What a great post! Keep on blogging!
Great post.
Just stopping by from SITS
AMEN! :)
I'm stopping by from SITS to say hello! great post :-)
AMEN! Dropping by from SITS!
Great post! Keep on writing!
Over from SITS saying hello.
Very cool! Congrats on being the FB today :)
I totally understand where you are coming from! What a wonderful post.
I loved this post. I too suffer from an incredible blog inferiority complex, even though I have a loyal readership. But every day, I ask myself whether writing my blog is worth it, whether I'm any good at it, whether I'm just a fluke.
I wish I could be confident - life would be so much easier that way.
Great blog! You have a right to be proud of you!!
Well done! I wrote a Write On Post too..
Girl you could have written that for me all the way down to making jewelry!!
Over from SITS, enjoy your day!!
Great post! It can be so hard to give ourselves credit where credit is due.
Your blog is great and you certainly be proud of it! Well said.
My husband tells me that I share too much of my life...but that is who I am and I'm not about to change that or not be myself on MY blog.
Keep up the good work!
What a great post! You should be proud of your space, it's yours, you own it, and you're being true to yourself.
I've been at this blogging thing about 4 years now (wha???!!!), and I'm still under the radar. I swing between wanting to be a huge blogstar but then wanting to hide in my own tiny corner of the blogosphere.
Off to read more about your awesome life ;).
Over from SITS...
BRAVO!!!! Now keep blogging on because hun, YOU ROCK!!!!!!
i love this post! yeah i am guilty of doing something distracting and funny on my site when i am really down. it's just easier to live in the land of imaginary sometimes :) i am so glad you found the confidence you needed to shoot this blog into high gear!!
well said! Happy SITS day!
Oh, I can so relate. Being the little fish in the big pond. But...every pond needs some little fish...so I just keep on keeping on...doing my part...and making some amazing connections with others!
EXACTLY!
(Said with verve and gusto in SITsta solidarity!)
I have to say this is probably one of the best posts I have ever read from anyone. You are so real! Happy SITS day. I'm glad to have been brought to your blog and plan to continue to read!
I can certainly relate to this. In fact, I think most bloggers can relate.
Thank you for saying what most of us are feeling!
Hmmmm, I don't usually have such deep thoughts before coffee. Thanks for opening up my eyes to something I REALLY need to think about!
Respect the blog!!!! Indeed!
What a brilliantly written, thought-provoking post.
Happy SITS day!
So honestly you think 30-40 visitors a day is small?
I'm not sure I know who drops by, I don't have a count, but I rarely get more than 12 comments on any post.
I figure that I don't have time to visit 40 blogs a day.........so while I love the comment love and finding new blogs I'm not sure I want to be "that " popular. I write for me, and I hope a few folks enjoy it too......I respect all bloggers, no matter what their style!
I'm off to read more of your blog, you sound fun!
Great Post!! Write On!
Happy SITS day and I agree that I don't share as much of myself as what I had planned on when I started this journey. This was an AMAZING post!
Love it! Thank you for sharing. I think I will head over there and grab that button.
that was very inspirational, especially for a new blogger like me. thank you for posting this!!
You go girl!! That was awesome. I'm the same way, my blog isn't too serious or personal and I am sometimes hesitant to really open up!
Happy SITS Day! :)
You deserve to be proud of your blogging; it's first-rate!
Dang! What an awesome post! I often feel like "why bother? nobody reads my posts"....but then I remember that I'm recording my life so that family (who just happen to be lousy commenters) can see what we're up to. Once in a while I get creative but that's rare these days.
Happy SITS day!
Yes! You are awesome!
*high-five*
I'm new to blogging & Relate to your post!
I'm a small fish in the sewing/crafting blog sea....but hopefully what I share can help one or two people.
What an inspiration post! As a blogger and freelance journalist I can relate and appreciate most of what you said. Thank you and Happy SITS Day!!
Great post! I really enjoyed reading it! Happy SITS day!!!
I adored this post! I also hid behind my humor & yes, even snarkiness sometimes, & didn't allow too much personal life on my Blog. I did talk personally but never went too deep.
Awhile ago I was told I probably had cancer and I turned to my Blog to talk it out a bit & discuss tests that were being run. I had a lot of support from my readers & really remembered why I started blogging in the first place! I haven't posted lately about what the results were because I was in this self pity mode. Didn't want to feel like my blog was a depressing place to come to. After reading your post today, I remember that it's *MY* blog & there's a reason readers keep coming back. They like what I have to say or they wouldn't be there right?
I'm going to bookmark this post & remind myself to read it whenever I start to forget that my voice is as important as everyone else's.
Thank you for that post! (stopping by from SITS btw)
I've posted a lot about this very thing. Can't seem to let go of my insecurities. It's nice when you find others who feel the same, although no one should feel like that...these are OUR blogs, right?
I love your blog. :)
Don't we forget why we blog in the first place sometimes?
Awesome post - Happy FB day -
Happy Sits Day! I think you have a great blog, and you SHOULD be proud of it:)
I've only been blogging since the end of January. I'm not sure I'll ever make it to 300 posts...but I'll try.
Bring it Sista!
Your comment thing says: I'll be sure to visit your blog and return the favour.
DO YOU REALLY think you can with all this SITS love??????
Blog on, SITSta!
What a great post. Claim your capital W.
I like your moxie!
Congrats on your SITS feature!
You're so right!
I think so many of us feel this way. It's scary to blog and say what you feel. Thanks for sharing!
you should be proud! :)
happy sits day! :)
If you have the passion and the talent, then have the patience ;)
We all can't be dooce and the bloggess and such overnight!!!
Blog on SITStah!!!!
I've been blogging since 2005 and only now feel comfortable self-identifying as a "writer" and not doing so half apologetically (you know how we do it: "Well, I 'write,' but it's just my own blog, and it's just a little blog that hardly anyone ever reads, ha ha, little old me.") I think it's a girl thing. We need to toot our own horns more. We have that "Don't brag!" voice rattling around in our heads.
You inspired me today to put up that Respect the Blog button on my own blog. R-E-S-P-E-C-T! It's not easy to put yourself out there each day. We've earned it.
Write on!
Happy SITS Day!
AMEN!!!!
Peeking in from SITS
If the purpose of your blog is to express yourself then just remember that life is real - it's not some perfect fantasy. Our kids aren't perfect. Our husbands aren't either. And neither are we. We all don't live in a Harlequin romance novel. We all don't come born with a financial silver spoon in our mouth either - many of us struggle. Many of us live in average homes, in average cities, in average lives. Life is rough, and raw and sometimes it hurts.
But... it has those wonderful, awesome moments of joy and laughter and fun too! The ones that are REAL, not some drummed up fantasy we think people want to hear. Just always remain authentic to yourself and to your life, and you'll continue to do great!
Happy SITS feature Day!!
Stopping by from SITS! This blog was very inspiring! I am fairly new to blogspot, but not blogging - I tend to feel my words, my day to day life, my interests .. simply aren't interesting enough to blog about. You have definitely encouraged and inspired me here!
Keep on keepin' on, my friend!
LOVE THIS POST!! so true - so true!!
You said it well. We should all have more confidence!
I hope I can live by your words for more than 5 minutes, ha ha...
Happy SITS day
Amen to that!!! I sometimes wonder if I share too much with the world but often times those are the posts which get the most responses, oddly enough. Almost as if there are other mothers out there struggling with their kids on a daily basis...as well as marital troubles, etc, etc.
Sing it sister!
Wow! THIS is a great blog post! Thank you!
I'm new to blogging (since January of this year) and it can seem overwhelming at times
visiting from SITS
You hit the nail on the head! Congrat's on being FB today! You go girl!
I LOVE this post! I'm visiting from SITS and need to go directly to my Google Reader subscriptions to add you :)
WOW!!! You have inspired me to do great things. I think highly of myself but not highly enough to pursue my creative passions: jewelry making, writing a book, just to name a few. Woooooooo...I feel like pumping my fist and saying power to the peopel. You write on blog was very powerful. Never think your word doesn't matter because you have moved me!!!!
What a great post! I was just explaining to somebody how blogs are not just narcissistic pursuits and how I have benefited both from writing and reading them! Happy SITS day!
Yea! Good for you and good for Kelly!
Great post! Write on!
Happy SITS Day!
Good for you! Keep on blogging proud!
Happy SITS day btw!
Some days I love my and others wonder what I am doing. But I enjoy it immensely.
I've been blogging for 2.5 years and the "audience" has always been my children (in about 20 years). Whenever I think of a topic, my first thought has always been "would they be interested in reading this one day?" It helps keep me focused.
On the other hand, there have been times when I've WANTED to blog about something, but because of the public nature of my blog I haven't. I don't want to embarrass my husband, or it is too painful and I don't need a lot of people feeling sorry for me. I think it is easier for people to read such private stuff when it isn't contemporaneous so they know the author "survived" it.
My favorite blogs are ones that capture the full range of the Human Experience. It is sort of like people - if someone is always happy and polite, I tend to not bond with them as much because there is so much more than that, KWIM? So I wouldn't say expose yourself more than you normally would to get readers, but be genuine to YOURSELF and the readers will slowly straggle in.
But I agree with some of your other commenters: there are so many good blogs out there, it is hard to find time to read as many as I'd like. So if you don't have readers it doesn't mean you aren't a great writer, it is just the nature of the biz.
Happy SITS day!!
First of all, Happy SITS day!
Secondly, I have to say, Amen Sister! I feel the same way about my blog too and I had moments when I didn't blog what I felt because of what others may think, but now realize that is not of importance, it's all about me.. :)
You go girl!!! I think you are AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Helen xx
Your posts are great!
Great post! Really. Inspirational!
I love this post. I easily could have written it--so thank you very much for the encouragement to stop selling myself short.
You're right...we DO do a lot when we blog. I spend time writing to the best of my ability.
Great timing to be featured!! Enjoy all the SITSta love today!
On this day you have 100's of readers and I'm sure lots of us will be back now that we've been introduced and know where to find you!
Wonderful post and so relatable!
Write on and blog proud!
What a great post! I'm going to post mine too and come back in a few days and let you know about it.
Happy SITS Day!
This is a great post to feature - as I think many of us feel this way but either can't (or won't) put it into words as eloquently as you did!
Thanks for speaking out for many of us!
Happy SITS Day!
This is a great post to feature - as I think many of us feel this way but either can't (or won't) put it into words as eloquently as you did!
Thanks for speaking out for many of us!
great post! it's too true.
I'm encountering all sorts of people who have no concept or understanding about blogging whatsoever.
So good on you and your accomplishments and thanks for sharing.
From a fellow Canadian. :) Happy SITS day.
And look at you now~! Over a hundred followers and I'm sure that will keep growing! See you are important. And even if there were sitll only 30 or 40 that followed. YOU were important enough to them. But I can see now that you have made your mark. Good for you! Keep blogging proud!
Good for you! I'm so glad you realized how talented you really are.
Happy Sits Day!
And can I say Diddo. You have taken my feelings and typed them out. I haven't been able to put together a REAL post in months because the things that are consuming my thoughts (My dad's cancer and my problems with my hubby)... well it's not quite politically correct to post about them.
So instead I post about funny stories and my kids too.
I am so proud of you for putting yourself out there today. That was inspiring and well... awesome.
you tell them!!
Coming from SITS..great blog!
What a great post. I can really relate. Sometimes I hate that darn Follower count. Mine is stubbornly set at 25 and it does seem to undermine my sense of worth when I see other bloggers with their hundreds of followers, but it's posts like this that really make you realize that it IS worthwhile and these blogs really DO mean something, even the piddly little ones! Yay bloggers!
Your blog is great. Write on!
Oh my gosh, you're amazing. And SO right. Blog proud, damn it!!!
You go girl!!
Blog and be proud!!
Happy sits day!!
Holy camoly! I loved this post and want to memorize it. You were the spokeswoman for so many of us. I want that button, I want your zeal, and I want R.E.S.P.E.C.T.!
This is so amazing and it is definitely a policy that I'm going to adopt! :)
Keep it up! I love this post!
You go girl!!
Jamie :)
Happy SITS day! Great post, keep bloggin' on!
Well .... here it is the end of your SITSa day .... Are you PROUD ? great job ! jtrophy at aol dot com , ck me out at www.icoulduseadeal.blogspot.com
Rock On! Visiting via SITS and LOVE what you said here.
Awesome post!
And, I notice, you have a few more than 40 readers now. Great job!
Wonderful post! Happy SITS day!
Here! here! I think I have a bit of that shyness as well and as I read your post I could feel my self esteem rise along with you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am only on about 25 or so posts (pretty new to this) but I have fallen in love with it. It is an accomplishment to me.
Thank you again and congrats on your happy SITS day!
Good for you! Happy SITS day!
Amen, sister! You're doing great! I started my blog years ago after my first was born, left it because the mom blog world was getting weird for me, and then came back and am SO happy to have found lovely fellow bloggers like you through SITS. I think I average 5 readers a day so you've got me beat by far ;)
Great post!
I love blogging!! I blog because it is fun and the bonus part...I made some good friends!
Happy SITS day!
Always remember that it only takes one person to really make a difference. I think both of your sons would say you are "the one" that has made all the difference in the world to them. Blog away!
Good for you! I think you really captured what so many of us feel--insignificant--and turned it on it's head. You're awesome! =)
Hey girl you are doing a great job! I have only been bloggin since Jan so I hear ya! But you have a ton of followers now so you must be doing something right!
Preach it sits sistah!!!
I'm a 1st time visitor from SITS. Truly enjoyed this post. I think you were channeling a lot of us, especially judging from the comments you got.
Write on sista! And Happy SITS day:)
Stopping in late for your SITS day-congrats! Great post- you go girl!!!
this was an awesome post!!!! Great job
I think you've had your Oprah Moment. And all these feelings are so true of any writer. You've made it. You are here. Congrats.
As a fellow Canadian, I think those long cold winter days really beat us down. What better way to keep positive and happy than blogging!
Keep up the great posts and if you need a shoulder to cry on or need a good laugh - check me out.
I think we're in the same boat.
Mind you, I'm a little grumpier.
Happy SITS day!
I'm in Canada too!! After reading this one post thanks to SITS, I'm definitely going to be following along! :)
This is a great post. You threw yourself out there -revealed a lot about yourself.
I think you can blog about whatever you want.
You rock girl! Blog on.
Good for you chickie!
Just wanted to let you know, that I've blogged proud!
Fantastic post! Keep blogging proud and thanks for the encouragement to the rest of us to do the same.
Thank you for this! I recently found out that a newspaper (actually a single publisher of three newspapers) has been taking posts directly from my blog and printing them. They used my banner, my photos, and my post but didn't link to me. Of course that is little consequence when you take into account they just blatantly stole my content for three publications and three websites.
When I contacted them, they replied with "Oh yes, and since you contacted us, we need you to sign over rights so we can publish it in all future publications as well..."
Yeah, they been smokin' something.
I had to go around and around and finally got my content off their website but they have really done me dirty and made money off of my content.
Anyway...I just needed to vent. THANK YOU!
Gratefully,
Christy Jordan

P.S. DMCA is a GREAT resource if you are in the US! It is a federal offense to steal content from a website. :)
What an absolutely FREEING post! I love that you did this and I loved what you said.
It's hard for those of us that walk around in a bit of insecurity all the time to shout about our awesomeness. But it's there. It's SO there. You rock!
I wrote about the same thing last nite, after having read about this on DMD's blog:
