Blog Question

For blog writers and blog readers.

How do you use your comments? Do you reply to questions people ask in your comments? Do you use them as a conversation spot? Do you go back and recheck comments on other people's blogs to see if they've replied to any comments you left?

I'm going to be interacting more with people in my comments... So I'm curious if you follow comments on the blogs you read.

Thanks!

I do reply to commenters in my comment section but if it is a lengthy or invested reply, I usually email the person I'm replying to to give them a heads up.

There are about 3 blogs that I do repeat comment checks on b/c I know that those particular bloggers are comment conversationalists and that their commenters tend to leave long, engaged feedback in the comment section. Otherwise, I rarely go back to someone's comment section.

I usually use the email back function if someone has asked a specific question or if I just want to comment back to them specifically. I never know what to do if I don't want to answer it to the world and they don't have email enabled. I rarely comment back in my comments section. I figure they won't come back. Maybe I should, though because you never know!

If I want to know if I have been responded to, I click on the little email follow-up comments box when I comment. I love that feature!

One more thing: if you are going to try to make your comment space more of a discussion area, you should remove the comment moderation feature. We bloggers are a hungry sort and we don't always want to wait for blog owner approval.

In 2+ years of blogging I have only had a small smattering of spam and only one Troll comment--that, in the end, was laughable. I'm not sure comment moderation is necessary.

Interesting point, Mad. I'll think about removing the comments moderation. (I'm usually pretty quick publishing comments, though... Unless I'm out for the day. I tend to be a bit obsessed with checking my email.)

I think you can still remove any comments that you don't like, can't you? Maybe not on blogger... Hmmm...

Oh! Look at those cute little garbage can things... Cool!

Yes, Mad, I agree... removing comments moderation now. Whee!

If I have a reply to those people who take the time to make comments on my blog, I always leave it in the comments section of my site. If they have a blog, too, and they're a new commenter, I usually visit their blog and leave a comment letting them know that I responded back at my blog.

As for blogs I read, if the option's available I subscribe to follow-up comments so that I can stay on top of the conversation. If not, I try to remember to check back, but that's generally touch-and-go.

In general, I think comments can be really helpful to know what type of information people are responding to, and they allow us to build community with other bloggers.

I always try to respond to comments, but I have been so busy lately that I haven't even had time to write a post, let alone respond to comments. At least my lack of writing comes with a lack of comments. Makes things easier. ;)

yes, yes and yes! i love that the comments section can be conversational and i ALWAYS subscribe to follow-up comments, and i'm assuming that others are too, so they can see how i've replied to them on my blog.

when i have a giveaway, i always try and visit those who left comments. if i get someone new on my site, i always go say hi.

i disabled word verification ages ago and the world didn't collapse.

now tell me - how do you find out about this whole top ten searches thingee??? i'm curious now

I use wordpress, so it may be a bit different, but I do apply to comments right in the comments section. I feel that it is important to do it this way, because who knows when later down the line someone will do a search and come upon your blog. Maybe someone asked a question, and the reader will not know what your answer was. I think it adds to your content that way.

On Wordpress, there are plugins you can add where someone can receive replies to comments in their mail. A person can check the box, and then know if you have replied. Another way to know if there is a reply, is to click on RSS Comments. I try to check back when I have replied to a blog, but I don't always remember to. I think it is wonderful to have the email feature active. :)

PS. I'm a huge fan of your blog. :)

When I've got time I check out other sites from other people's comments. Always makes me feel like I'm eavesdropping, but I get over the guilt pretty quick.

Yes, yes and yes. I have no social life of my own!

I have comment moderation because I received a vitriolic rant just after I started blogging and I don't want stuff like that "out there". May remove the word verification though and see what happens. Living life dangerously!

If I feel compelled, sometimes I will email the commenter back but I don't do this all the time - as you know! : ) Although sometimes I cannot find their email, so that can be a bummer.

I don't usually leave reply comments in my comment section b/c I don't think most people go back to check.
