Book Meme

I have been tagged by Elaine at The Miss Elaine-ous Life. She's having a book & coffee giveaway, it doesn't get much better than that. My two favourite things in one giveaway.

Here are the rules:

  • Pick up the nearest book of at least 123 pages.
  • Open the book to page 123.
  • Find the 5th sentence.
  • Post the next 3 sentences.
  • Tag 5 people.
I'm sitting at my little work area - a corner of the couch, two tray tables, a laptop, yarn, crochet hooks, hand cream, and a pile of books, magazines, papers, and other work-related stuff. The closest books are anthropology books I have to research my paper. My paper is about how menstruation taboos effect the status of women in matrilineal versus patrilineal societies. The book I picked up for this meme is called Blood Magic: The Anthropology of Menstruation, edited by Thomas Buckley and Alma Gottlieb & published by University of California Press.

Page 123 falls within a paper called "Menstrual Politics: Women and Pigs in Rural Portugal".

And starting at the 5th sentence:

Household pig-killings are important social status indicators and are used as a semipublic measure of familial well-being. At the matanca, the greatest threat to a household's economic well-being is posed by the purported destructive effects of menstruation on processing work. Women argue that during her menstrual period a woman is "ill with menstruation" (Anda mal com a menstruacao).

And on that note...

Tags. I hate tagging people - I have this bizarre, pathological fear of bothering people - I'm weird, I know.

Regardless, I'd like to tag:

Sara at Happy Baker
Sass E-Mum at One Strangely Lush Mother
Scrappysue at My Home Wellingtown
Working Mum at Working Mum on the Verge
SuburbanCorrespondent at The More, The Messier

I was going to tag Amanda at Amanda's life, but when I visited her blog I found out that there's been a death in her family, her sister, I think. I just want to say that my thoughts are with her and her family.

Thanks for the tag, Reluctant. You seem to be quite the renaissance woman.

I like the sound of this game, so I'm playing it. (Secretly hoping to find a smart yet funny book when I get home. Very comfortable with the fact it won't be about Portuguese menustration).

My thoughts and sympathies are with Amanda too.

Thanks for doing the meme.

Done and done.

Is it just me or is it a little quiet out here in blogland. What's everyone doing?

Thanks for the tag - I'm beginning to feel like a real blogger! I will try to do it soon; hope I'm not near a 'Bob the Builder' book!

Interesting research by the way. (Good luck with it; I find that the researching is the interesting part and the writing up is agony!) I once visited a temple in Bali, Indonesia and was informed that menstruating women weren't allowed to enter - it was the first time I'd encountered this sort of thing and was quite shocked at the time. Then I just thought 'How would they know?'
